I write with great sadness that Isaiah ‘Ikey’ Owens, keyboardist for Jack White during his Mexico Tour, has recently died.
Police have found him dead Tuesday morning in his hotel room in Puebla, Mexico. He had just played a gig the night before. The cause of death has not been determined. Owens has been touring with White for the past couple of years until his untimely death at 38 years. Out of respect, Jack White has cancelled the rest of his Mexico Tour to honor Mr. Owens. He worked as an L.A. session man, member of the Mars Volta, and the founder of the Free Moral Agents.
Many fellow artists expressed their grief through social media, including Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and drummer for the Roots and bandleader for “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson. Starting his career in Long Beach, he gained early attention playing with the Long Beach Dub All Stars. He had recently moved to Nashville for the sake of his career. “I don’t want to live in L.A.; I’m not really interested in New York. Nashville has been really good to me and kind of developing my career more in the studio.” said Owens to the newspaper Orange County Register.
I’m pretty bummed out to hear that such a cool guy is gone. Rest in peace, man. I hope Jack and the others close to him recover from their grieving.
